Who We Are

The Lady Cans (2022-23)

Picture
The Lady Cans began in 2009 as a team consisting of two Girl Scout leaders, one mechanical mentor, and six Girl Scouts. In the last 15 years, The Lady Cans has grown to nearly forty members, ranging from 6th through 12th grade. Our team is community-based, with teammates attending approximately fifteen different middle schools and high schools in the Central Texas area.

We are a special interest robotics troop. The Girl Scouts of Central Texas is our home council and one of our main team sponsors. (And, yes, we sell Girl Scout cookies!) The Lady Cans participates in FIRST Robotics Competitions (FRC) through the FIRST in Texas District.

FRC combines the excitement of sports with the rigors of science and technology. Teams are challenged to raise funds, design a team brand, hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors.

Team Traditions

Team traditions are an important part of The Lady Cans; they give us a sense of history. Sharing traditions links current teammates to the trailblazers who came before us.

PGBOP
PGBOP is a team acronym that stands for Pink, Green, Blue, Orange, and Purple--all the Duck Tape colors we use on our bow ties and hats. The five colors were originally inspired by colors from Girl Scout cookie boxes.

Duck Tape Love
During our first build season, Duck Tape began their product line in different colors. Since our five colors were also produced by Duck Tape, we took the product and made it our own.

Each team member decorates their own hat with Duck Tape. At competitions and demos, we also leave a trail of the Duck Tape bows we make on all the people we meet.

Our bows
Girl Scout SWAPS are small gifts that girls make and trade with each other. They are meant to promote friendship between fellow Girl Scouts, especially when meeting someone new.

True to our Girl Scout roots, The Lady Cans makes Duck Tape bows to give out at our demos and the events that we attend. Our bows are the perfect conversation starter for new and old acquaintances alike.

Jessica
Our team mascot, Jessica, started with a simple idea: combine the head of a robot with a Duck Tape dress.

Jessica has evolved over The Lady Cans' history. For each iteration of our mascot, the team has worked to preserve the  elements that make Jessica uniquely Jessica.
