FIRST strives to spread the world of STEAM to students across the globe. Girl Scouts works to build girls' courage, confidence, and character. The Lady Cans is a combination of both organizations. We strive to introduce young women to STEAM principles while developing the skills to be successful in a variety of careers.
Team members participate in hands-on learning to develop skills in a broad spectrum of disciplines: mechanical engineering, computer science, business, and media/graphic design. We also do outreach focused on inspiring girls to explore and pursue STEAM-related fields.
Team Schedule
The Lady Cans operates as a year-round team, with meetings happening at the Girl Scouts of Central Texas - Kodosky Program Center in Austin, Texas. We divide our year into four “seasons”: Pre-Season, Build Season, Competition Season, and Off-Season.
PRE-SEASON | [SEP. - DEC.]
During the Pre-Season, the team meets each Friday evening. We use the Pre-Season as a time for team building, fundraisers, community service, and learning skills for the upcoming Build Season.
BUILD SEASON | [JAN. - FEB.]
The team meets five days a week during Build Season (Wednesday through Sunday). Team members attend at least three meetings each week to help with the design, build, programming, and testing of our competition robot.
COMPETITION SEASON | [MAR. - MAY]
During Competition Season, the team travels to district and championship competitions. We continue to meet five times a week (with team members attending at least three meetings) to prepare for competition.
OFF-SEASON | [JUN. - AUG.]
We use the Off-Season to focus on community outreach activities and various projects prior to Pre-Season. During Off-Season, the team meets every Thursday and Friday evenings.
